Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, the words “fuel pump skimmers” should bring a vivid picture or even a personal memory to your mind. For years, these sneaky little devices have been plaguing gas stations and their customers alike.
Recently, I sat down with CSP Magazine technology writer Jackson Lewis to talk about the technology “arms race” retailers and law enforcement are in with skimming criminals. We refer to it as such because, like every other area of cybersecurity, there is a continual one-upping of technology going on between the good guys and the bad guys.
When it comes to fuel pump skimmers, however, there may be an end in sight thanks to point-to-point encryption (P2PE) technology. P2PE has already made big contributions to cardholder data security at the retail point-of-sale, but there are specific challenges to its adoption in the fuel retail space.
I’m confident that the present-day challenges to P2PE adoption will be overcome fairly quickly and skimming will become a thing of the past. Of course, that just means we must be prepared to meet the next challenge, because cyber criminals don’t give up and neither do we.
Read the CSP Magazine article “Keeping Up with the Skimmers” to learn more about fuel pump skimmers, the criminals behind them, and the promise of P2PE technology.
